WPTC LONDON/STRATFORD TOUR 06 PLAYS CONFIRMED TO DATE

EMBERS
By Christopher Hampton (Les Liaisons Dangereuses)
Based on the novel by Sandor Marai
Directed by Michael Blakemore (Democracy, Copenhagen)
Starring Jeremy Irons
Duke of York’s Theatre, London

Exploring themes of love, friendship and betrayal, EMBERS is set in war torn Europe in 1940, in a Hungarian castle, where a retired general Henrik awaits the arrival of Konrad, a friend he has not seen for several decades. This new play concerns a key event in the past that was pivotal in the lives of the protagonists.

In EMBERS, the fateful day was over 30 years before when Konrad had abruptly deserted a hunting party he was on with his lifelong friend Henrik. The following day Konrad mysteriously fled Vienna leaving behind his two inseparable friends - Henrik and his beautiful wife Kriztina. The passing of so many years has not dulled Henrik's memory of that day nor answered the questions that still haunt him.

JULIUS CAESAR
By William Shakespeare
Directed by Sean Holmes
Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford

The earliest of Shakespeare's Roman plays, this gripping political thriller explores the complexities of power as Caesar's assassination sees a nation descend into civil violence and instability, with the play portraying opposing dynamics of democracy and tyranny.

This new production features a company of actors, headed by RSC Associate Director Gregory Doran, who also appear in another of Shakespeare's Roman plays, ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, being performed in the Swan Theatre.

ENEMIES
By Maxim Gorky
New Version by David Hare (Plenty, Skylight)
Directed by Michael Attenborough
Almeida Theatre, London

Set on a family estate in provincial Russia in 1907, Gorky's powerful drama focuses on a struggle between workers and industrialists. Caught in the middle, the well intentioned liberal- minded owner's brother is slain in a scuffle with a workman. The ensuing investigation uncovers a political fervour that sweeps the countryside.
