WESTON PLAYHOUSE TO AUDITION AREA YOUTHS FOR LES MISÉRABLES

(Weston, VT) --- The award-winning Weston Playhouse Theatre Company seeks local children to perform in its summer production of the epic musical LES MISÉRABLES by Alan Boublil, Claude-Michel Schönberg and Herbert Kretzmer. The Weston production, directed by Tim Fort with choreography by Susan Hagan and music direction by Rob Meffe, will be the legendary show’s long-awaited Vermont premiere.

A modern classic since its London and Broadway debuts more than 20 years ago, LES MISÉRABLES is based on the Victor Hugo novel about the life and loves of the escaped prisoner, Jean Valjean. LES MIZ, as it has come to be called, boasts such memorable songs are “Who am I?,” “Master of the House,” “On My Own” and “One Day More.” The theatre company is looking for boys and girls, ages 8-12, to play Gavroche, Young Cosette and Young Eponine. If possible, the roles will be double cast so that no child needs to be responsible for all performances.

Auditions will be held at the Weston Playhouse on Main Street/Route 100 in Weston on Saturday, April 12, 2008. Auditionees should arrive by 10:00 am, prepared to sing to material from the production as supplied and taught by the theatre company. Candidates for the role of Gavroche (vocal range B below middle C to Db a ninth above middle C) should learn “Little People” and candidates for the role of Young Cosette (vocal range A below middle C to C above middle C) should learn “Castle on a Cloud,” in advance, if possible, and should be capable of projecting in a 300-seat theatre. Young Eponine is a non-singing role. Auditionees should bring a recent photograph and a resume or list of any performance credits with complete contact information. All auditions will be finished by 12:00 noon. Decisions will be made by the following week.

Rehearsals for LES MISÉRABLES will be held in Weston from July 8 through July 30, on afternoons and some evenings, every day but Monday. The children will not be called for all rehearsals but must be available throughout this period; there may be one or two late evening rehearsals. Performances run at the Weston Playhouse from July 31 through August 23, with evening performances every day but Monday and matinees on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. Parents are responsible for transporting performers to and from the theatre and for being present during some rehearsals and performances on a pre-arranged schedule. A small travel stipend and two comp tickets are offered, and dinner is supplied on Wednesdays and Saturdays when the company performs two shows.

Parents with questions about the musical or the audition should contact Weston Playhouse Producing Director Steve Stettler at 802.824.8167 X102 or sstettler@westonplayhouse.org. The Weston Playhouse Theatre Company is a non-profit professional theatre supported in part by funds from the Vermont Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and an ever-growing family of individuals who believe in the impact that the performing arts can have on its community
