Playing Favorites

Filed under: Producers' Corner — sstettler @ 1:37 pm

I recently found myself on the phone with a journalist who was writing a feature on our 2010 season.  He wanted to know what excited me the most.  I hemmed and hawed and ended up talking about every show in the season.  I’m delighted that at this time of the year most everyone I see wants to know our plans for the summer, and I can’t wait to tell them… unless they ask me my favorites.

Do I like every play I see?  Certainly not.  Am I passionate about every play we produce?  You bet.

Choosing a season is a bit like buying gifts for friends and family.  You want something special for each person, and you want to like what you’re giving them as well.  We work hard each year to give every imagined audience member an entry point and to provide a rich and rewarding mix for those who choose to take in everything on our stages.  And we’re just as proud to be doing a new one-man drama in the Weston Rod and Gun Club as we are to be producing a smash musical revival in the Playhouse.

So forgive me if I can’t tell you what I’m most looking forward to this summer.  Unless I can be honest and say “all of it!”

I’m a bit of a Luddite, and even I am excited by the possibilities of increased “community” that come with our new Web site.  Theatre is a collaborative art, and it isn’t complete until it is shared with an audience, so it’s right that we extend that sense of community electronically.  At the Weston Playhouse, we’ve always believed that the few hours you sit in the theatre are just a fraction of the enrichment you receive from a play.  Now, with the mere click of a mouse, you can enjoy rich background material, a glimpse of the creative process, a connection to related events.

Of course no Web site can replace the deeply communal pleasures of a live performance.  The magic of being transported by a story as it unfolds onstage is heightened by the joy of sharing that moment with a room full of theatre lovers.  Still, a post-performance trip to the Web site lets you revisit the experience in photos, reviews and video clips.  You might also choose to share your experience or discuss it with others via email and social networking.  It might even inspire you to book a ticket for another show, or to join our community of donors or volunteers.

Okay, now maybe I’ll check out this Facebook thing…
