A must see!!! It is our first time at the Weston Playhouse and we where not sure what to expect. We where so pleased with the characters and the screenplay. We laughed 80minutes out of the 90 min play… I have not enjoyed an evening like that in YEARS.. Please go see this performance, you will not be sorry…. Bravo to the cast… you should all be on Broadway.
We enjoyed “Spelling Bee”, but found the references to Palin a bit odd. Understand, I don’t really care for Palin myself, but found the reference distracting. It was, on occasion, difficult to make out words, but otherwise enjoyable. Looking forward to Year of Magical Thinking.
We weren’t sure what to expect with the spelling bee, but we know from experience that Weston delivers. It was easy to see director Tim Fort’s hand in the comedy parts. Like everyone else at the show, we had a very enjoyable evening of laughs! This show is really good, (and I can’t wait for the rest of the season)
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
I just wanted to say that I, and the five people I brought to the show, absolutely loved it… !!!
I loved the audience participation. It’s a good thing we didn’t get there earlier… as my theatre friends would have signed up… !!
Great job… and cheers to the cast and crew !!!
We saw the Friday July 11 perfomance and loved the show, fabulous, lots of fun. The sound system could have been cranked up a notch on some of the performers (we were in the 4th row) and my drothers would have been for the final bows to be done one by one, the usual way, rather than linearly all up front, so that individual performances could be better recognized, e.g. Susan H. got short shrift as the first to bow though she was one of the best I thought. Any maybe the 3 audience participants could have been asked to stand and be recognized.
Although I enjoyed very much being one of the “contestants” in the Spelling Bee, my husband and I did not feel that this play was up to the usual standard we have come to expect at the Weston Playhouse. We have been season ticket holders for years, and we even remember the night you carried on with the production after the river had flooded and washed out the basement! We love your theatre and look forward to every season. Spelling bee just didn’t seem to have a plot or characters that we cared deeply about. Never mind, we’ll be back!
As directed by the wonderful Steve Stettler, I’m writing in with my comments on the “Bee”.
It was great! Perfect casting, perfect set and costumes. It is a very cleverly written show. There were so many funny one-liners that my Mom and I were laughing all the way home. I loved that audience members were included on stage and while still in their seats. It was a fun evening of theater. You won’t be disappointed!
Please note: 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is directed by WPTC Producing Director Tim Fort (but Steve appreciates the plug!).
Actually I knew Tim Fort directed the show. What I meant was that Steve “directed” the audience in his opening remarks before the show to go on the website and comment and I just wanted him to know that I was following his direction!
Wonderfully uplifting and fun. Lively and active. As usual, great cast. A nice night out for us older folks. Brought back some memories of my spelling bee days, and being in a spelling bee on the radio for the Cheshire County spelling bee.
Light-hearted is what we need.
We loved it. It was good fun with excellent acting and very clever word play. The Cabaret afterwards was also outstanding.
Rush to see Spelling Bee. I have been coming to the Weston Playhouse for 25 years and this was one of the best! Funny, light and very well cast. Bravo!!!
WONDERFUL PRODUCT AS USUAL, BUT ONE REAL COMMENT. IF THE SHOW WAS MIKED, THEN IT WAS AN UNSUCCESSFUL. THERE WERE HOT SPOTS AND DEAD SPOTS. WE ALWAYS SEAT IN ROW A BALCONY AND HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED THIS BEFORE. IT MIGHT ALSO HAVE BEEN THE MIX BETWEEN THE ORAL PARTS AND THE PIANO WHICH ALWAYS RAN HOT. NEVER THE LESS, GREAT JOB…JER
I thought “Spelling Bee” was very original and upbeat and FUNNY. The cast was great and did an excellent job as usual. My only complaint was the song sung by the young man with the bodily function problem. I am not sure why this was added to the play, it wasn’t funny and wasn’t entertaining and it wasn’t appropriate for any audience in my opinion. The rest of the play was great, and I really enjoyed it.
