Internships are a great way for any college student or recent grad to put what they learned in the classroom to practical use, gain experience, pad their resume, and network. Weston Playhouse is an amazing place to do just that, and we’re prepared to prove it. Today will be the first in a weekly series where we ask previous interns a few questions about what they do and how Weston helped them along the way. First we’re going to hear from Travis Blackwell, Equity Stage Manager.

What was your internship position at Weston?
I was a stage management intern for the 2014 season, specifically on The Three Little Pigs and A Chorus Line.

What do you do now? / What is your current and/or upcoming event?

I’m an Equity stage manager! I just wrapped up a reading of a new musical, PSMed a world premiere David Lang opera at BAM, ASMed an immersivly staged orchestral piece with the New York Philharmonic at the Park Avenue Armory. Up next I’m a production assistant for the first national tour of Hamilton. I’m stoked!

How did Weston prepare you to get where you are now?
Weston had and continues to have a major impact on my career. I met many mentors and close colleagues (and friends) who have directly affected my life whether it be by recommending me for jobs or being a sounding board for major (and minor) career moves. Michele Kay, Tina Shackleford, Taylor Dyleski, and Alex Smith all come to mind. My meeting those guys directly led to me booking this Hamilton gig and countless others. Additionally, the hands on practical experience I had as an intern provided an invaluable opportunity to jump head first into the professional world. I’ve since gone back to Weston to work as an Equity ASM (in fact, I got my card on this past summer’s Man of La Mancha), and that’s really been a game changer for me. Safe to say I’m grateful. What’s your best Weston memory?
It’s excruciating to choose just one. An absolute highlight was competing in the 2014 Weston Regatta with my boat mate and fellow SM intern Alex Smith. We made sure everyone made it to the finish line by taking last place in the race.
