“Self-Confessed” in SoVT

About Town, Plays and Events |June 19, 2018

funhomeIn conjunction with our July production of FUN HOME, we’re thrilled to partner with Manchester Community Library to present a selection of images from the exhibition, “Self-Confessed!: the Inappropriately Intimate Comics of Alison Bechdel,” organized by the Fleming Museum of Art at the University of Vermont.

Fleming Art Museum’s Marketing Director Chris Dissinger says the “Self-Confessed” exhibition explores Bechdel’s work as a writer, an artist, and an archivist of the self, someone who constantly mines and shares her own experiences as a way to communicate something vitally human: the quest for love, acceptance, community, and social justice. Selections for the Fleming show will be on display in the Upper Gallery of the Library from July 12th through 28th. See the show (which opens July 5!) then browse the exhibit, or vice versa! Plus, a special artist/author event is scheduled for July 14; details below.

Renowned cartoonist and graphic novelist Alison Bechdel (b. 1960) writes and draws stories that explore universal concerns—from the building of community to the complexity of family relationships—through the minute observation and recording of her own life. Bechdel, who lives in Bolton, Vermont, is the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, awarded to individuals for extraordinary creativity, and is the third Cartoonist Laureate of Vermont, a position unique to the state. Her pioneering comic strip about the lives of a group of lesbian friends, Dykes to Watch Out For, ran from 1983 to 2008 and was syndicated in over fifty alternative papers, including Vermont’s Seven Days.

In 2006, she published the graphic memoir Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, which explores her relationship with her father, her coming out, and his possible suicide. Fun Home was a New York Times bestseller and the basis of the five-time Tony-award winning musical which we’re producing next month.

Bechdel followed up in 2012 with Are You My Mother?: A Comic Drama, which follows her relationship with her mother, girlfriends, therapists, and her exploration of psychoanalytic theory. Both books are works of multilayered complexity, employing nonlinear storytelling, creative formatting, and a rich trove of literary and historical references.

From July 12th to 28th, The Manchester Library’s display will focus on pages from Fun Home as the inspiration for the musical, along with selections from Bechdel’s other bodies of work. Plus, together we’ll host a special book signing and reception on July 14th from 4-6 pm. Enjoy light bites from Pan Latin Catering and cash bar while you explore the exhibit and have a chance to meet the author/artist!

Fun Home opens July 5th on our Second Stage. Join us for the five-time Tony Award Winner, featuring a cast of Weston favorites and fresh new faces! Tickets available online and through the Box Office: (802) 824-5288.
